I was watching The World According To Garp this morning and there was mention of a society of woman called the emma james society that purposely had their tongues removed to protest the rape and tongue removal of an 11 yr old girl named emma james. Does this society really exist or is it just fiction? I just cant believe that there are doctors that would condone the self mutaltion of these women for this purpose. ty

It is "emma" james, it is "Ellen" James and there is no such group as depicted in the movie/novel. The author was making a point that women often act very irrationally in response to challenges they face.

The women you're thinking of are Ellen (not Emma) Jamesians. (I haven't seen the movie, but Ellen James is the name of the character in the novel.) The group is a figment of novelist John Irving's imagination.
