Genius is probably an amalgam of accuracy, relevance and originality, in varying proportions. Stupidity is just slow-wittedness and/or wrongness.
As for the middle ground, or "common sense", I like what Einstein said. He said, "common sense is the deposit of prejudice laid down in the mind before the age of eighteen."
He wasn't referring to racial prejudice, of course. He's just talking about general preconceptions which can often be erroneous and stultifying.

A genius, can be very stupid in many things.
I have known several people that had the I Q of a genius, but had absolutely NO common sense.
some people can learn & retain enough knowledge, to be a genius, but common sense, you have to be born with.

being a genius means that you seem "stupid and insane" to other people because you can figure out things that are unusual to the rest of society. but seeming stupid because you are stupid just means that you're plain old stupid.
