I see there are options for the Sony PS3, but I am not sure why you need a hard drive on a game console. Before I spend the money, I would like to get some input on why the hard drive is needed. Help and thanks.

I thought the same thing back then. At first, I thought it was useless but I later realized that the hard drive is there not only for putting in music and video (which I had no interest in; I have a laptop), you can also download demos from the PlayStation Network, save games without memory cards, and actually install parts of the game to cut off loading times.

And what makes it better is that you can upgrade your hard drive when you need more space.

The Hard Drive is used for saving games and other media. It kind of makes sense really. Without a hard drive you can't save anything. And having a built in hard drive will cut down on buying so many memory cards.

As a matter of fact, on my PS3, the Heavenly Sword game save and Heavenly Sword game data takes up almost 1/4 of a GB... yea that's very big and it's because games( PS3 games) are getting so large in size a Hard drive is needed. And that's why Sony put hard drives in all of their consoles.

Also, I heard a conference recording between Microsoft Xbox 360 executives online, and they were telling developers to cut back on certain content for games because Microsoft isn't sure how many people have hard drives for the 360 and if they don't have hard drives they can't save and play certain games.

If you don't have a hard drive for certain games you wont be able to play them, Because in Heavenly Sword before you actually start a game and start saving the game, part of the game is installed on the Hard drive.

The hardrive is nice because you can stop going around looking for memory cards with 8 mb of memory. Every system has the "hardrive" optition. The Sony PS3 is nice for saving music, pictures, videos, demos, add on content and more. Thats why I chose PS3. The 360 does have a hardrive if you get the most expensive one and the wii's hardrive comes standard.
