It's the theme from "Love Story" by Henry Mancini.

It is the love theme from the 1968 movie "Romeo and Juliet." The music was written by Nino Rota.
He also wrote the music for "The Godfather."

I think it was Roger Williams. Don't know if it was written specifically for it or now, but I think I can recall its being in the movie, "The Way We Were".
