There are so many reasons NOT to apply this to a society.
Elimination or reduction in identity theft? Or, the complete and utter decimation of ones identity if the right information was in the wrong hands. Lets give identity grabbers another route or path of opportunity.
It could be attached to such things as: store purchases, loans, insurance, vehicle registrations, college credits, life insurance, home mortgages, credit cards, and yah! voting history... Actually, unlike the soc sec card that some are very reluctant to give out for the same reasons, this could be a money making opportunity for the govt. sell the info attached to the card. Insurance companies would kill for such information.
No, we already have a national ID #, or soc sec #. And the information attached with it is already tough enough to keep out of sticky hands. We do not need to create more of such problems.

Actually a social security card does erode freedom, by forcing me to give the government a portion of my money, which they always tell us it is our money. Why do I have to give it to anyone if it is mine? Why does it get spent on things I don't agree with if it is mine?
And a national ID card will make things worse, eventually it will be used as a bank/credit card. Once this happens, it will destroy any rights that anyone ever had, since you will be able to purchase government approved things. They will also be able to turn it off if you speak ill towards them, thereby allowing them to decide who lives and dies. It is a concentration camp without walls. Rather brilliant, if you are a control freak who is bent on running the world.
And yes, most information about you is available, which I have been complaining about for as long as I can remember. It is ridiculous how easy it is to get someone's personal info. Something needs to be done to stop this.

Well first off, let me say it doesnt go against our freedoms because those were revoked when bush gave himself complete control on may 9. And its terrible because even if we dont legally have freedoms we still have our freedoms. The RFID chips will monitor our lives no matter where we go. The government will be able to see everything we do. Its just the first step towards the complete control of the elite. They portray this as a good thing for it will, stop terrorism and all that bullshit. When in reality, theyre just invading our lives and lying to us.

A valid and easily verifiable ID would go a long way in stemming identity theft, welfare fraud, illegal immigration and a variety of other concerns presently facing our nation.
I fail to see a legitimate downside.
All of the information about any one individual is already available to anyone who is hellbent on getting it - from employment records, credit card transactions, banking records, SS Administration, the IRS, phone records, GPS travel information, toll both data from Easy Pass - in short, a secure national ID card would contain no more, and probably a lot less, information than is already available.
I suspect it's simple paranoia - too many "1984" readers.

Aside from permanent denial of the basic civil liberty to go about your business w/out petty officials and the police demanding to see your papers whenever they choose and imprison you if you don't have them there is a fundamental very few people have understood.
This is really all about introducing an identity tax. The cards will start w. basic information and cost most people what will seem a nominal amount. The information required and its tracking, updating and verification will blossom into an industry overnight as ever increasing details and checks are made and laws are passed to check up on those checks while politicians stoke the furnace of paranoia they will have created as bureaucrats are paid an ever increasing percent of GNP to finance this completely useless/pointless government operation that will inevitably grow to rival all other government spending combined. We will be stuck running around trying to prove to each other and the State who we are for no purpose while this branch of government grows to the point that it can justify employing one person to keep track of each person they are assigned to (because it will be cheaper) then you can kiss the relatively small amount of freedom that we are currently allowed goodbye forever. We all have everything to fear from it.

Because a national ID card would be used to verify voter eligibility so the libs have fought it for years since many of the voters on their side are illegals.
