I prefer the white pants on the referees; the black pants with the white stripes seem too casual. From my limited look at the different games, could this difference be due to weather? Ie. if it is going to be rainy and muddy they wear black? and indoor games they wear white?

No, they all wear the same color pants. The different colors are in their hats.

It is only recently they began wearing those ugly black pants. That is why I was wondering why they are doing so now.

Sorry, couldn't be weather related. Tonite on MNF the refs are wearing those awful black pants. Any other ideas?

It's preference...

But, the head ref decides it, so if he's wearing black the whole crew is, same as if he's decked out in white pants...

The correct answer is what color is best for players to see in playing field and what sport. You would not wear green in a football game.

white pants for nice weather..black pants for not so nice weather..or maybe the refs just choose whichever they want to wear that game
