I am also a college student myself. I study engineering and have a tablet pc. These are great because I can write my notes directly unto my computer and use it as a laptop. I have a Fujitsu T4220 (2.2 ghz processor, 120 gb hard drive, etc). Anyway go with you gut. If you are going to do artsy stuff, get a mac. For gaming, get a Pc. Just make sure that you can do your homework and use the machine with easy. As far a brand, I recommend an HP or a Sony. They tend to be well built. Toshibas are good computers, but they are expensive like Macs. Like I said though, go with your gut. Get what's right for you!

whatever laptop you purchase, make sure it is the best of the best. remember technology demands are on the rise the avg. program, song, video, game etc. takes up more space and basically more "stuff" to run it... (i really do not have time to go into details)
also remember that this is a laptop that you want to be using 5 to ten years from now... you do not want to buy a piece of junk now and then have to replace it 3 years later...
and when you do get ti, make sure you have the best malware protection for it...
(get a dell... it is what everyone has, so more ppl will be able to provide support, lest your dell breaks down or you have a question...) dells are also fairly decent, despite what you might hear

For $1500, I would invest into a Apple MacBook. It sounds like you are a native Windows-user. But don't worry. At one time, I was strictly a Windows-user as well. I purchased a Mac back when I was in college and absolutely loved it. The interface was designed very nicely and very clean looking. The new intel-based Macs also allow you to run windows, either virtually using Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion, or you can boot into Windows using Apple's BootCamp. I've used both of these options and have been very satisfied.
You can check out the specs of the MacBook here.

Also, you could possibly get a discount with your student ID. When I purchased my first Mac, they gave me credit for an iPod of my choice.
Hope I was able to help.

keep away from Dell, HP,Compaq,
Toshiba, Acer, Sony, are much better,, but the thing to check out before buying any computer is the after sales service for each and every system... that way you will know who has the best after sales service,,, thats what you need the must after you have bought the computer,,,, AFTER SALES SERVICE
If you buy a mac system then check out what the actual cost of ownership will be? with the mac there are a lot of hidden costs. plus you're tied to mac for the life of the system.. you have to buy their software and accessories, at inflated prices.. something to think about...

I love my Gateway laptop. It's got 2 GB RAM, 160 GB HD. It runs great, very fast, and it's pretty lightweight. I had an HP before, and it was very heavy and got hot fast. Mine was around $600, and that is where I got it was Best Buy.

My huge big fat suggestion:
- Don't go with DELL and TOSHIBA.
- First, take a look at lenovo website; they have thinkpad notebook and table pc: great great PC's.
- Second, check out SONY.
* if you don't believe me, you can go check some reviews at some website such as youtube or pcworld etc...
