Yes, you need a router so you can connect wirelssly to your internet. All the router does is allow you to connect through a wireless signal rather than through your ethernet cable.

You can piggy back on someone else's connection if they have an "open" wireless network. Most people are using some type of security password or phrase to prevent anyone from outside getting on their network and seeing their computers. You will need a router or some other wireless device to transmit your internet signal wirelessly to your laptops. Be sure the router is a wireless router (there are routers that are not wirless). Also, if you don't have a modem yet, you might want to look into the all-in-one devices that act as modems/routers-gateways and even print servers.

i have a laptop with wireless internet capabilities. although im not extremely savvy computer-wise, i figured out how to access the internet with it. you should go to the start button then go to "connect to" and there will be a list of networks that you can choose from. your computer must be in range of someone who already has a router in the vacinity of your neighborhood. if you are relatively close to one, one of the networks will show green bars that indicates how strong of a signal you have to access the internet. it can be accessed through just one green bar (weak signal) but it usually goes on and off with this low of a signal. try putting your computer near a window. your computer will sometimes connect automatically to a certain network, if the signal is good.
