Tonight....Christmas eve. Mars will be visible. Look at the moon and go to the 2pm position. It is pretty bright and I see red and white. That is it...Mars!

No it's NOT nonsense. What I suspect you are referring to is a total lunar eclipse. This is where the full moon passes through the shadow of the Earth. At this time the only light that reaches the moon from the Sun has passed through the atmosphere of the Earth (which is full of dust) and the moon appears red in colour.

I've seen it several times and it looks very weird, like the moon is a balloon suspended just out of reach! Find out when the next total lunar eclipse is happening at your location and go out and see it.

There is no requirement to look at the moon ever. What you heard is nonsense.
