Is this our India? Sham governments that protect US interests, private industries thriving on the spoils of war, violence along religious factons.

There were Brits back in the day who truly thought that they were making India better by raping it of its resources. Has Bush done nothing more than opened up an old chapter in history that should have remained closed forever by "Taking up the White Man's Burden"?

the iraq war is a perfect example of colonialism

To bring the gift of self-determination to Iraq is not colonialism by any stretch of the imagination. We in America have enjoyed and shared the fruits of liberty with the world. Most successful modern countries have a form of self-determination. We have never gone to war against a democracy.

We brought that gift to the Iraqi people. If they did not want it they would not have shown up in record numbers to vote under very real threat of violence, death and retaliation. But they did show up and proudly displayed their purple thumbs.

No, they are not now nor will they be a colony of the USA. Hopefully, if the tree of liberty succeeds in taking root there, they will become our ally, friend and trading partner.

I see no down side with that. A successful democratic Iraq will soon have a standard of living superior to every country in the region. I see no down side with that, either. Other countries that currently live under tyranny will want the gift of liberty, too. Again, I see no down side with it.

Merry Christmas!

Certainly. Also, we are currently setting up 14 permanent bases and having a new U.S. embassy as the size of the Vatican. This will anger the Iraqis. The Iraqi government can't say anything because Bush will stop giving them money to sustain their government. But in reality, they want their country back. It would be nice if we just left and give them the beathing space to work their reconciliation, but we just aren't the nicest and coolest nation we once used to be.

For it to be a case of colonialism we'd have to take over and dominate their political and cultural systems
