I am not an American but an Indian. As is known we have not been on the best of relations with the USA and we have not and we are not agreeing to many of its policies. However, there cannot be two opinions about the civilized statys of the country. We may not agree with many of its policies but we have to take into account that many of the situations it faces are the outcome of the evolving status of the world which is coming nearer and nearer.Fruictions are natural among neighbourers and yet the neighbourers do not and in this case cannot go away. We have to learn to live together. In a recent review of Amreican public opinion by PEW it is seen that even the Americans are aware of their imperfection. A majority have disarmingly admitted that they are not the best but are trying to improve. This basic facts has to e appreciated.Awareness of one's imperfections and an endeavor to get over them is the sine qua non of a civilized whether it is a person or a nation.

Nope, we're not the most "civilized" and most Americans couldn't care less. To us there are more important things than knowing the difference between Bach and Beethoven, or how does impressionism compare to dadaism, or lifting our pinkie when sipping the right tea from the right cup at the right time of day, or which way the butter knife blade should be turned, or how to order a meal in French, or be able to discuss in depth the writings of Sartre, or 'dressing' for dinner, ....ad nauseum.

America takes its roots from a multi-national pool. Our foundations began on a frontier when it was more important to get the job done before the next Indian attack or blizzard instead of fretting about being "civilized" and boorish.

Absolutely not.
We don't provide healthcare for all citizens.
12 states still have the death penalty.
Our public schools are terrible.
There are more superficial people in the US than in any other country in the word. I cite the attention and importance assigned to Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and the like. No other country's populace is guilty of that.
Over 25% of our children live in poverty.
Look at the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. If the response (HAH!!) to that was "civilized", I'd hate to see the definition of "uncivilized".
The prisoners at Guantanamo Bay have been held for up to 4 1/2 years without charges or access to a lawyer. We don't even know if they really ARE terrorists. WE are the bullies.
We started a pre-emptive war against a country that wasn't threatening us.
We have the A-bomb, but we tell everyone else they can't have it (at least our perceived "enemies").
Articles of impeachment haven't been brought against this administration even though they have committed many war crimes and flauted the UN and NATO.
I could go on, but it would take all day and my fingers would fall off.

Not exactly, but, we might be considered because most of all americans don't perform brutal religious performances such as having a man enduring 1000 cuts to be made into a man. In America you turn 18 and your a man. I don't think any country is exactly civilized.

Not when it practiced African slavery for about 2 &1/2 centuries, wiped out most of the Native Americans "in the name of Christ," stole about a 1/4 of it's territory from Mexico, and today refuses to grant legal immigration for most Hispanics, who now make up almost 25% of the population. There's a reason that more black orphaned infants are being adopted by Europeans every year: because they're not being adopted by Americans, because of all the deep racial prejudice.
