No direction plate. There is simply an on off switch on the wall which I flip when I want the fireplace to turn on. I tried putting a match up to where the pilot flame used to be and nothing happened. I am scared to flip the switch and then put a match up to the pilot. I think it may be dangerous that way.

Probably. Almost all gas appliances using a pilot light for ignition have a combination valve which turns to three positions: OFF, Pilot, and ON. Set it to Pilot, and with a match near the pilot flame tube, push on the knob. (Some valves have a separate button.) The pilot flame should light. Continue holding the knob down for a full minute and verify that the pilot flame impinges on the thermcouple head (a small cylinder connected to the valve by a thin copper tube). If the thermocouple has gotten hot enough, the flame will remain lit when you let go of the button. You can then turn the knob to ON and you're good to go.

first find your gas valve it should have a button you can turn it should say off pilot on put it on pilot press it down while pressing down turn on pilot keep pressing down about 40 seconds if it turns off after you release the button repeat again but this time hold down longer once the pilot light stays on after you release the button simply put it on ''on'' it should work then while you light the pilot it is not much gas going through so any chance off damaging any thing is very minimal also if its a newer unit it might have a piezo igniter like your barbecue that you just push to light

first listen for gas or if there is gas odor get out and call 911. that is what the fire departments all say. you can turn the gas off at the inline shutoff. then vent the room. then turn back on and relite. dont know how long it was out. if a short period then it should be fine to relite. just make sure that he room isnt full of vapors or potentially kabloom. we do not want that.

Yes. There should be a direction plate. Just follow that.
