Looking to buy a Radeon 3850. I went to newegg.com, and they have hundreds of different kinds. Does it matter if its visiontek or diamond, or asus or whatever else there is; and some have more RAM than others, I assume it is always better to have more RAM. Does anything else make a difference?

Just get the one with 512mb gddr3. Gddr4 is fast but expensive, and usually found only on the HD3870.

Performance of different brands will be the same except for factory overclocked variants. They will usually differ in terms of fan noise and package bundle.

Well first I don't think there are hundreds of them, maybe 20 or so. Anyway, the manufacturer dose not really matter too much. What you want to look for is to see if the card is overclocked or underclocked. check for these:

1. RAM - the more the better
2. Core clock speed - The higher the better
3. Memory clock - The higher the better

The rest of the specs should be the same for all HD 3850s. You may pay more for the higher specs.

Gaming performance will be about the same between them all. More RAM makes a difference at higher resolutions. At 1024x768 it will be the same speed between 256mb or 512mb but crank the resolution and the 512mb is a better choice.

Faster clock speeds are nice, but if you really want to you can overclock any of the cards yourself.

Personally I am looking at the Diamond version as it is the only one that supports video INPUT so I can record shows and get rid of my VHS collection.

Some have different outputs (some DVI, some HDMI, etc) so make sure it has the outputs you like.

Overall not huge differences between them though.
