There a re a number of performance affecting elements on a computer. If you have more background tasks running that your system can keep up with, you need to address that. If you components are old and lack modern efficiencies, you need to address that. If you don't have the minimum resources you should, you have to address that.

Typically, adding more memory to system significantly affects performance. So, it you have less that 1gb memory, you will probably have a noticeable improvement when you add more.

Older components like slower hard disk and slow processors also significantly affect performance. It is pretty easy to upgrade things like memory and hard disks. Processors can be a little more challenging.

If your performance question is in regards to gaming, a good video card is really important!

If you just have too much junk running, you should close down and disable non-essential applications that start when your system starts. You must not run two Antivirus programs or two network security programs. These KILL your system performance.

Are you thinking your system is slow when your are using the Internet? This generally not your system but the performance of your Internet connection or the web sites you visit.

Most modern computers have a large excess of hard disk space. Modern disk drives are pretty darn fast too. Emptying the recycle bin and defragmenting the hard disk do not typically increase the performance but are reasonable maintenance tasks.

Run disc cleanup daily. Go to the computer shop and add RAM or something. Go through your programs and delete those that are unneccessary.
