1995 Buick Century... Car is fine, but when we turned it iff the back brake lights stayed on. We had to dis-connect the battery to get them off so as not to run the battery down. But what could be making them stay on?

This question has been edited because we found out it IS the brake lights. Although the window brake light works in theback,,,,It's the actual brake lights that stay on.....Appreciate your help in this matter.

What do you think about it being the voltage regulator inside the alternator? We bought the gold and have a guarantee and CAN replace it if it's the problem. While working on it...Hubby wanted me to turn on the car while he was under the hood. He disconnected the battery while I ran the car to see if it might be the alternator. Well, it ran, BUT everything went haywire. Radio station was changing and speed odometer went crazy. Also, when I turned it off...the car started itself up again. I DIDN'T DO IT. It's like Gremlins took over.

Well, I was going to say the brake light switch was stuck on, but if the third light is working as it should, the switch is good.

That leaves a short in the wiring somewhere that is taking 12 volts to the brake lights. Start tracing wires from the rear sockets forward. Or from the switch back until you find the problem.

You're saying that the high or window brake light works normally, that is goes on when the brake pedal is depressed and goes out when the pedal is released? And you're also saying that the left and right brake light is staying on all the time whether the brake pedal is depressed or not? Do the turn signals work? Also do the right and left brake lights get brighter when the pedal is depressed? I'm not familiar with that model so it's hard to diagnose without being able to do hands on checks. The brake light switch could be the culprit depending on how that high light is operated or you could really have the tail lights rather than the brake lights on.

there is a brake switch at the top of the brake pedal inside the car. if the switch is pushed back out of its mount the plunger won't contact your brake pedal shaft and the lights will stay on.

follow the brake pedal up to the top and you'll see a plunger type switch going through a bracket. From the back of the bracket push the switch towards the brake pedal. that should shut the brake lights out. if it doesn't the brake light switch is shorted and will have to be replaced.

if you have to replace the switch there is a connector the unplugs from the back of the switch, then the switch unscrews from the bracket like a nut on a screw. the new switch doesn't have to be screwed in, you just push it forward until it contacts the brake pedal and connect the connector.

I'm sure that your problem is with the switch

hope that helps

So the one in the window goes out but the others stay on?

The switch has two seperate sets of contacts so if the third brake lamp works fine that does not rule out a bad switch but it does rule out switch adjustment as the cause.

If unplugging the wires to the switch solves the problem, then it's the switch.

A brake mild change is a sequence of contacts that close that furnish a course for the advantageous voltage. No #a million to do is see whether it fairly is properly adjusted. #2 make certain the contacts are sparkling and corrosion unfastened #3 each and every so often you're able to desire to take the change aside and sparkling it

Brake light switch,(down by the brake lever, where you put your foot, about 2/3's the way up), has become loose, and is not adjusted anymore, or is broken, and needs to be replaced. You can do this! Go to auto parts store, or might turn out to be dealer item.

I would suggest checking your fuse.
Also did you recently change any globes/bulbs they could be the wrong watts which may cause your lights to stay on.
