It all depends on whether the coolant leaks into the oil or not. If a head gasket ruptures in such a way as to let coolant into the oil then it will be milky looking. However, a head gasket can rupture without coolant seepage into the oil.

Probably gray. The dark, almost black oil mixes with the water, and becomes gray. The milky looking oil will be under the oil fill cap. This is from paraffin in this type/maker of oil. The method I use to check a blown headgasket is to start the vehicle up, unscrew the radiator cap,(be sure the vehicles cold, we don't want anyone to get burned!), and look into it. Do you see bubbles? Have someone get in the driver's seat, and press on the brake, and put it into gear,(automatic tranny). Have them speed the vehicle up a tad,(Yeah, you know I'm gonna' say it, USE care!) Now do you see bubbles? Blown head gasket!

Look for oil where it shouldn't be-like on the tube going into your coolant overflow reservoir, on the sealing ring of the radiator cap, anywhere in the cooling system. Or look for water where it shouldn't be-like in the crankcase, or on the dipstick. Any color other than golden to black indicates some kind of failure, although typical blown headgaskets give a chocolate-milk look to your oil.

Good Luck!

it depends on how much water got into the oil. but on a blown head gasket the water may not go into the oil it might be going out the tail pipe or the exhaust may go into water jacket and out the radiator
