when i went to put gas this morning, i unscrewed the fuel cap, and it made a farting sound followed by the smell of gas. my mothers car never did this and am wondering if this is just normal with older model cars.

LOL
no the fuel system is sealed and it creates a vacuum in the tank as the fuel gets pumped out
this is normal don't take it to a shop
you don't always hear this when you remove the cap but there is a vacuum in your tank during operation
you hear it more if you've operated your vehicle for a long time just before you open the cap

Depends on weather U have a VENTED fuel system or a closed system - if vented then the gas cap is plugged. IF closed then your purge valve isn't operating correctly --------- (i think) just make sure there is not an OPEN flame or heat source around or YOUR FART will cause a MASSIVE EXPLOSION..[ & that's not a joke ] FUMES is what does the damage NOT the Liquid !

Water vapor builds up and can do that sound as you take the gas cap off. If the car starts backfiring when you drive, stop somewhere and get one of those yellow bottles of Heat and put it in, it evaporates water vapor and any small amounts of water in the gas.

You might want to get your car checked, because that usually means that your car is draining your gas.
