Rocker wife is correct. pcos cause obesity on some women.obesity is a symptom. i have pcos and while i have some of the symptoms i am not obese.
the weight distribution of women with pcos generally is around the middle.
also it is harder for women with pcos to loose weight. this has to do with the way your body processes insulin.

Sorry half these people are wrong.
The truth is this.... PCOS causes obesity. It is not the other way around. Being overweight is a symptom of PCOS.
However...not all women who have PCOS have a weight problem. PCOS is a complex condition. Not all women have every symptom. Some women have PCOS and have insulin resistance, some women have PCOS and do not. Some women have PCOS and have irregular periods, some women do not. But obesity, especially weight around the stomach area, is a symptom of PCOS.
Good luck.

Both. It is too simple to say that food and exercise are purely environmental factors. Appetite is controlled by genetics, for example the hormone leptin. The leptin gene was studied using mutant mice, who were all obese. The presence of leptin decreases appetite and increases metabolism, meaning that energy is used faster. Prader-Willi syndrome is another purely genetic condition where appetite is completely unregulated - sufferers are literally capable of eating themselves to death if unsupervised. However, other reasons for overeating such as comfort eating may be considered environmental. Reasons for not exercising frequently enough may be largely environmental in this day and age but could also include inherited heart, lung, limb and joint problems. Other than genetic factors controlling appetite, there are also genetic factors controlling how food is used after it is eaten. For example, women are more likely to have fat stores than men and also store fat in different areas of the body. Some people may extract more energy from food than others by processing their food more efficiently versus passing it out as waste. And some people do just seem to have a faster metabolism, meaning that they use up the energy very quickly. It is an interesting question with no definitive answer, but I think there is a good case for both types of factors being relevant.

I have PCOS.I use to be over 300 lbs. Im now about 160-165 (depends on the month). I used a very very very strict diet ( i have celiac diease and diabetes),and ive managed to keep it off for over 3 years.I exercise EVERY day as well. As a result of the weight loss, I was able to concieve my twins using fertility drugs, and carry them to 35 weeks. They are now a year old. So I know if i can do it anyone can. I'm now saving up to have a tummy tuck because of being obese for so long. Good Luck.

I was diagnosed with PCOS last year. My dr says that PCOS causes weight gain, particularly around the middle. It also makes it alot harder to lose any extra weight as well.

Since PCOS isn't something you can get rid of, I'd say that half the people who've given you answers are wrong.
I've lived with it since I was little, and honestly, I've been fat since forever, too.
I'm one to believe PCOS has serious ties to causing weight gain, along with a lot of other things that happen to your body because of it. Including hormone issues, and hair growth. It all ties in.
