The metal part that should unscrew so that the Brita will screw on is not budging. We have tried everything from pliers to clamps, but everything just slides around the metal piece. How can I get the piece off?

Get a paper towel and wet it with vinegar wrap it around the fitting and drizzel somemore vinegar on it ...let sit a half hour or so and the fitting should turn off. Lime has built up on it and the vinegar will disolve the lime.

Since you've damaged it already use a pipe wrench on it after a shot of penetrating oil. Try not to crush it as it may have male threads.

Try WD-40. Leave it on for a while.
