I don't think that it is illegal unless the picture is under a copyright. If it is you can always do something like invert the colors which makes it your own version; that makes it legally your idea.

It could be illegal to use that picture for something other than to look at. You are obligated to contact the copyright owner and ask permission to use the image. It is also illegal to use the picture in something you sell or make money from the image. The owner of the image is entitled to royalties for the use of their property.

Every time you access a web site, a copy of the content is saved you your computer. This makes loading the web site faster the next time you visit. So, you already have a copy if the image somewhere on your computer. Just having a copy is not illegal.

You should assume a picture is copyrighted unless you have good reason to know it isn't. If you sell or give someone a copyrighted picture or post it somewhere without the owner's permission, that's illegal.

Simply by displaying it in your browser you're downloading the pic and saving it temporarily on your computer. The copyright holder gave you permission to do that by putting it on a web page. I think copying that temporary file to a non-temporary file is the same. So that's legal. (Assuming, of course, the person who put the pic on a web page has permission to do so.)

Shadowfa... - Copying someone's copyrighted material and altering it doesn't make it yours.

I'm not a lawyer, so consider this an unprofessional opinion.

No, it's not illegal. If a site doesn't want you to save their pictures, they can disable right clicking on the images.

Some artists disable right clicking on their pictures so you can't save them. When you right click on some of their art, you'll get a JavaScript popup the says something like "Don't steal my art!". When this happens to me, I disable JavaScript in my browser and steal every one of the pictures on the site. Just because.

Well, the copywrite laws are somewhat complex, the mere act of saving a photo that was posted on the internet is rarely a copywrite violation....but saving and selling the photo....or saving the photo and using it for other uses......or saving the photo and using it as if to claim the photo is yours....that's a different story.

No. It's only illegal if you try to sell pictures without permission of the owner of the pictures.
