The Old English forms of eleven and twelve are enleofan and twel(eo)f(an) respectively. They literally mean "leave one" and "leave two" because if you were to remove ten you would leave one (for 11) and leave two (for 12).
The dictionary entry for 12 says,
"the cardinal number that is the sum of eleven and one".
The synonyms listed are:
12, XII and dozen

Twelve would be our base if we had six fingers on each hand. Pity we don't really.
