That's a wide open question, sort of like what car to buy....
Pick the business, determine if it's a formal one (bank, car dealership) or more freestyle (home brew beer, crafter site) and build up from there. The more established businesses want traditional format, easy to read fonts, non-eye catching colors, they're staid and sometimes stuffy, not willing to take chances.
Newer businesses are more cutting edge, willing to stand out from the crowd and show it in their advertising. They're more able to turn on a dime with their advertising and want a fresh look. You can use more freedom with these kinds of businesses and get away from the traditional.

Either, you are a business owner and want someone to work up a complete coporate identity for you ... for free.
Or, you are being asked to do this for someone else, and want one of us to do it FOR you so that you can take credit for it and, possibly, get paid for work we do .... for free.
In either case, a business owner should expect to pay for commercial services. He shouldn't expect to get telephone service for free. He shouldn't expect the corner gas station to fuel his trucks for free. He shouldn't expect janitorial services to come in and clean up for free. He shouldn't expect telephone book or other advertising listings for free.
He should not, also, expect a couple of thousand dollars worth of graphic design services for free.
