Who agrees with having an identity card? What is the reason for your decision?

My view is that with all these identities going missing it would have to be very simple.
Only name and and id number
Can proove it is my card only by finger print no signature
No details of age, address, bank, job, spouse or children

I have nothing agains an ID card, In these days of terrorism it is needed to make sure we can keep tracks on certain individuals.
If you have nothing to hide then you should have one.

I live in Bulgaria where everyone has to have one. I need it sometimes in a bank and have never been stopped by the police to show it. In fact I feel safer with it as it proves who I am. Unlike on here where people have multiple identities. It a piece of plastic and I have never heard anyone complaining about carrying those around. An intrusion of privacy is a stupid excuse as you are already filmed dozens of times daily. The one thing that bothers me is the cost of it but we will have to wait and see. Yes ID cards for everyone

I would not wholly disagree with it.
However, I would have to have some reassurance that all my details would not go astray. At this precise moment in time I don't feel THAT reassured.

Edit........
Just read again and the idea of only a fingerprint to go on would not work. What good would a fingerprint do. If criminals can forge passports with photo ID, what make you think they can not do it with fingerprint ID. Talk sense woman!! You would need a great deal more details of that person for the whole thing to work.
A lot of people are worried about the impact of that!!

Who is going to get an ID card, anyone who can prove they are British? And if they can prove that, why the very expensive card? Plus it will be easily copy ed, giving anyone who inspects it false security, the so called biometrics will only be available in a few places. I have nothing to hide, but the state has plenty.

Initially I thought it was a good idea but with hindsight I no longer think so. There is far too much information required for a simple id and we now know that the Government seems to be incapable of either operating a secure data base or safeguarding confidential information. Moreover, id cards would not have been any use against the perpetrators of 7/7 or subsequent terror plots involving British born terrorists.
All in all it seems to more of a ploy for even more surveillance of the innocent general public. I find this Government's need for ever more information on us very worrying indeed. It smacks of Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany.

Well I have got an ID card.
I live in Spain where it is law, and it saves a lot of problems. No-one can pretend to be me.
Illegal immigrants can get very little for nothing as they don,t have ID cards. I have to show it at the bank, at the post office to pick up a package, when I pay by credit card, and when I sign any official paper and when I want to renew my driving licence(which has to be renewed every 10 years)
I have no problem with it , on the contrary it makes me feel safe, that I probably will not be the victim of identity fraud. Shredding your paper rubbish seems like something from the dark ages to me.
When Madrid suffered that terrible terrorist attack the poor victims were identified straight away by their ID cards.

edit* it is law to carry it , but I have never been stopped, as I,ve never done anything wrong.

I.d. cards have absolutely no use whatsoever other than to give the government even more data on individuals than they already have (next they'll be wanting to put cameras in our homes). Whilst I have nothing to hid, I, like most people, still value my privacy.

Additionally they give the government agencies another fine opportunity to lose yet more data which would cause enormous security problems if they got into the wrong hands. We've already seen the DSS, NHS and the DVLA lose data on discs, putting people's security at risk - what next?

And most importantly, I.D. cards would have no positive effect in combating terrorism or any other i.d. issues as we all know they can be forged, just as passports, money, NI cards are at present.

No use at all.

This is a subject I am torn on! I realize the need for an ID card to prove you are a U.S. citizen. It would sure help with the illegal alien problem and the problem we have with terrorism, but I can't help but equate it with dictatorships. I have this mental image of being asked for my papers, in a thick German accent... I think once we have taken that step there may be no turning back and to be quite honest if frightens me.

No I disagree. It is a fundamental erosion of liberty to have to have an I.D. card in the country you born into. My objection is a) having the card and b) having to be made to produce it on demand to somebody (like say the Gestapo for want of a better word) in the street which will obviously happen in the future if they were introduced.
c) they could be forged so it would not prevent terrorism.
d) I have nothing to hide so I do not wish to have one. My human right. Otherwise why dont we all have a tattoo on our forehead. Where does it all end.
e) It is not practical to carry such a card around all the time, people will lose or mislay them, then what!
They can keep tracks on certain individuals without the need for I.D. cards.
I do not want one - it is my fundamental human right to refuse to comply.

P.S. Dodo oh so true I quite agree!

a gross waste of money. do you think all the teenage asbos are gonna think, 'better not go out tonight, cant find my ID card.'

Imagine the scenario;

Police Officer asks pensioner, ' show me your ID card please.' Pensioner, ' Sorry son I cant find it I'v only been out at the Bingo.' Police Officer, 'Madam you are now under arrest for not carrying your ID card and I am issuing you with a £50 fine.'

Meanwhile at a sink estate on the other side of town; ' c'mon bros lets get into the old motha fuckas flat, see if she got any stash we can sell on the streets. 'The plods av locked er up for the night.so we will clear the place nice n tidy for er comin home. Ha, ha, ha , ha, ha, ha, ha.....................................'
