Friend interviewed at a place, and they said they are an OEM supplier. What is OEM?

OEM means, "Original Equipment Manufacturer." In a nutshell, what that means (at least in an automotive context--which I assume you are talking about), is that they manufacture or produce products which are built per their customers' requests and specifications.

So, an OEM supplier is going to be a company which supplies parts (or systems) to an OEM.

For example, let's say that Ford wants to create hover car technology. Obviously, being "original equipment," (i.e., products/technology they do not have), they use an OEM supplier to develop the technology, and then supply them with the hover system. Ford slaps this custom-made system on to their automotive products, and sells it as a "Ford" hover car, even though the actual systems have been developed and supplied by different OEM suppliers.

That is the kind of place your friend probably interviewed at. Depending on what position he interviewed for, he could be doing anything from assisting with the engineering (of say...a hover system), to selling the company's (OEM supplier) technology/ability to produce technology.

Sometimes it can be a bit more complicated than that (e.g., there are suppliers who supply to the OEM suppliers who supply to the OEM's....called Tier 1 suppliers, Tier 2 suppliers, etc), but in a nutshell, you can kind of think of it as custom building....on a mass production scale (even though that seems like an oxymoron).

I hope that makes sense.

Original Equipment Manufacturer. A lot of bigger companies such as General Motors, Ford and Crysler all buy OEM pricing also, which is normally 15% less than list price for regular buyers.

people said it

but that means that the electronics they sell (usually accessories) are those that are made by the company.

For example, an OEM charger for an iPod would be manufactured by Apple, not Belkin or any other third party company.

OEM stuff is usually the safest to work with on your electronics
