You know what, she is the butt head. She is a parent. Part of parenting is setting an example. When you drive you are in effect agreeing to drive according to the law. If the law requires registration be current, then you must comply. It is not the cops fault that she failed to renew it. It her grown up responsibility to make certain her affairs are in order. If she is grown up enough to have children, she is old enough to handle her own business. There is no excuse.
And the poor me, I am a single mother of three BS gets old real quick. There are tons of single mothers that handle their business responsibly and don't sit there whining and on a pity kick expecting others to take care of them.
As for the law and if she will be in further trouble. I hope so. She was ordered to not drive the car. She failed to obey the command. She deserves whatever she gets and who cares what it is called.

Ignorance is not an exscuse. The proper term is driving with expired tags or not having a valid regisrtation depending on where you live.
No she can't get in trouble, and there are probably reasons why the officer didn't offer to give her a ride, such as liability.
And I find it hard to believe this lady was unaware that her tags were expired. The DMV sends you a notice that the tags need to be updated at least a month in advance. If she didn't have the money that's more reasonable, but still not an exscuse.

I don't know what it's called in your state, but here, it's called driving with expired registration. It's not even a moving violation here. There's a fine and you get your registration renewed.
Your friend got caught one day out of two weeks. It could have been a whole lot worse. "He didn't even escort her," what he did was tell her to get the registration renewed, then he left knowing she was going to drive home. Relax.

Being asleep at the wheel???
Sorry, but the cop was right. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, and you should keep up with registration and driver's licenses and things like that.
Plus, he didn't owe your friend personal escort. He had a duty to all citizens to continue patrolling, and not to take the asset of his patrolling off the grid to escort your friend home.
You call him a cold hearted butt head, but quite frankly, you don't say he gave her a ticket when he could have, nor did he give her a warning even. She could have been trying to support 3 kids and paying fines and court costs, but isn't.
You need to get perspective.

A single mother of three has no more rights or power over the law than a single childless man in his forties. her tags were expired, she was pulled over and notified. If your upset because the cop was rude, Tell you friend cops have bad days to don't take it personally. sorry but the use of the mother of three thing to try and pull some heart strings doesn't excuse her from obeying the law.

What David J said.
All I see is a bunch of words, with no shape or form. I don't even know where to start.
I would report the butt head cop to the superiors at the station and say he should have dealt with the situation better rather than leaving someone in danger.

The police officer should have provided transportation of the woman and her children to the police station, in the back of the squad car, or call for backup.
If no legal driver in the family able to come pick them up, then Department of Children's Services should have taken custody of the children, while mom stays in jail.
The facts of our civilization are that the DMV has a responsibility to issue licenses and registration to people who follow the rules, that are clearly spelled out, but many people choose to be ignorant of the law, and of their responsibilities to their fellow people.
The police have the awsome responsibility of enforcing laws in a society where many are scofflaws.
Parents have an awsome responsibility to bring up children to respect the laws, by not setting bad examples.

He wasn't a butthead, he was enforcing the law. She was breaking it.
There is no exception in the vehicle code that allows single mothers to drive without registration.

I know, it is always the police's fault. She knowingly drove with expired registration. He didn't give her a ticket and let her drive home. He could have given her a ticket and impounded the car. Cut him some slack because he could have acted like a real butthead and didn't.

I don't think whether she knew or not plays any role. It's up to her to know the status of her license.
Sorry the cop was a butt head. That happens sometimes.
