the motion is the same, as are the muscles used...but the timing is different.

with a serve, it is you that is tossing the ball. On an overhead, you have to adjust to the other person's shot.

also, you can use the entire court while a serve you only have a box to work with.

Sharon, Yes, they both are better the more powerful you hit them---same motion but different amounts of force applied meaning you might have a more powerful overhead than serve, or vice versa. I always loved watching Connors' skyhook overhead smashes. Hope this answered your question.

They both use the same basic movement... however, the motion for an overhead should probably be more compact than your serve motion.

with the racket hand yes.

However in serving you of course toss the ball up.

They say it's helpful for overheads if you use the opposite hand (not the racket hand) to track and target the ball. I.E. point at the ball the entire time until the racket compes in contact with the ball.

i dont hit mine the same. but on overheads, i tend to bend my knees more and jump higher to give a lot of power in my hit. i think using the same form gives you more control over the ball and following through is also critical.

Yes they are. They are almost identical shots except for with a serve you have to toss the ball and the shot has to go in a very specific place.

Hope this helps,
Kamryn

Yes...

But not if you're running backwards to hit the overhead shot...that's a slightly different move...
