NOT to put the best tracks on the cd?
Like, you go to youtube and you can hear songs that were recorded but didn't make it onto the cd, and you're like "What the crud, this is better than the cd!"

The record business is complicated. Some artists write over 50, 60 songs for one album and obivously they can't all make the cut. Maybe a few songs have a harder edge or others are "too soft" for what the artist is going for this time around. Maybe the producer and artist couldn't come to an agreement so the song got scrapped. There are a number of variables that come into play when the final 12 or 13 songs are decided. Keep in mind that record companies are a business and one that likes to make money. They are much less concerned with individual consumer satisfaction (even less concerned than most artists) than they are with their lining pockets. So if 100 people in Missouri hate the new ____ album - what does it matter to them if 1 million others bought it? Get it? Most record companies will promote a half as* album with 2 good songs that sells out than one with 12 GREAT songs that's a dud in the stores.

I tend to disagree with you. I actually wonder why they keep putting crappy BANDS and ACTS out with albums when most people cannot stand the cut-and-paste pop crap to begin with.

But the hidden gems that get uncovered are usually just as good, not better, as half the singles.
