What a great question!
Honest Abe, the first Republican, freed the slaves.
The Southern States, run by Democrat machine politics for 100 years, kept Black Americans ignorant, undereducated, disenfranchised (no voting rights), and tied to the land with sharecropping.
With the Advent of the Civil Rights movement, The South went almost totally Republican and has nominally stayed that way ever since...except for the Black vote!!!!!!????????
This is like the Jewish vote going for the National Socialist Workers Party (Nazis)! Why do they reward their former oppressors in this way, Ill never figure it! I defies all explanation.
Same for the Jewish vote. They prefer IDEOLOGY over self-preservation? or self-interest? Again, Unbelievable?

The Republican party changed sometime during the sixties. Most black people are smart enough to know that.
It was called the Southern Strategy.
At the time the Democratic Party moved more toward equality for blacks and supported the Civil Rights Movement.
Some of the Southern, racist members in the Democratic party formed their own party and called it the Dixiecrats ( Well know member: Strom Thurmond)
and when that failed they joined the Republican Party.
After that time starting in the sixties with Nixon. The republican party began to use race as a wedge to drawn in Southern States and it worked.
Southern states were very unhappy with the fact that the US was forcing them to abide by Civil Rights Law at gun point.
In the South in the sixties the KKK was very relevant and still murdering many blacks and any white person who supported voting rights or equal treatment of blacks.
Even though Southern States are still among the poorer states. They mostly vote Republican in presidential races.
Some times they vote Southern Democrat, but many times(not always) a Southern Democrat is almost the same thing as a Southern Republican
Also, Social programs benefit more whites for the simple reason that there are more whites in the US.

I believe it began in the 1960's with the Kennedy Administration. The Civil Rights Act an other societal changes. None of these laws would have been possible without the Republicans in Congress who opposed Al Gore's father Robert Byrd and many other racist/separatists. However, by far the President signing the bill into law usually gets the largest measure of credit. Kennedy and then Johnson were Democrats.

For many many years after the end of slavery black folks in the south voted Republican. (which is why many historic Black Colleges are named after republican politicians). Now as Blacks moved to the urban areas of the North they got brought in with economic issues into the democrat fold. In the south the change over didn't happen until FDR came to them and said "hey what have republicans done for you lately" and much like Bill Clinton he projected an aura of helping out the black folks when he was no more or less helpful then politicians prior to him.
After FDR and the depression black folks in the south went Democrat in large numbers

The current Republicans of today are the southern Democrats of the 1860's through the 1950's--the ones who supported slavery and segregation.
The separation occurred when Southern Conservatives left the Democratic party over abortion in the 1970's.

The current Republican party is as far removed from the party of Lincoln as Mars is from Andromeda.
Today, it would be the Republicans who kept the slaves in chains.

This again???
Its pretty simple..
Urban residents (city) typically vote Dem regardless of their ethnicity. Due to the extreme racism, abuse, and lack of opportunity that blacks were faced with in the rural south, many migrated and congregated in the cities. Most cities view communities as a collective effort versus an all about me society so their political views reflect this as well.
Thus, if not for the abuse of racism in the Red districts, more blacks would still be there and supporting the political ideology of the area.
As for "republicans who freed them"
This is true of the Republicans of old. Unfortunately after the Civil Rights Movement, the prejudiced "Dixiecrats" left the Dem party and overran the Southern Republican districts. It would not make sense for anyone to support people who view them with disdain. Whenever the Repubs decide to make a clean break from the racist SEGMENT (however large or small) of their party, I am certain that others will once again look forward to supporting them.
note: Thumbs down pointing out the problem and a solution. Neo-cons are something else.
Rather than "booing" me with thumbs down, why not have a discourse about the question at hand?

Emancipation was only the start. Democrats have moulded themselves as the Civil Rights Party.
Also, stereotypical Republican businessmen tend to be industrialists and capitalists, whereas the stereotypical Jewish businessman is into finance and lending. Jews also tend to populate professions requiring great rhetorical skills...hence their large representation in law and entertainment.
Despite their desire to live off the 1940s image as the "Party of the Working Man," the fact is that Democrats powerbase includes lenders, insurers, Hollywood and the lawyers that keep them all running.
Again, this is all based on stereotypes...but it sounded like that's what you were after.
