Josh: Yes, it was Newman. I had thought that a new cut of the Beatles' "Because" was a part of that score, but it is not listed as a cut at Amazon. Otherwise, I don't see any other 'songs' listed there.

Josh: In another listing of that soundtrack, "Because" IS listed (by Elliot Smith) a near-perfect rendering. I guess there is a Newman CD and a VA CD for this movie...

I can't list just one soundtrack or composer because I've been listening to this type of music and collecting albums for a very long time. Among my favorites are:
Max Steiner~~Gone With the Wind, King Kong (original), Life With Father, A Summer Place, Parrish

Bernard Herrmann~Jason & the Argonauts, Psycho, Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Day the Earth Stood Still, North by Northwest, The Three Worlds of Gulliver, Obsession

John Williams~Star Wars, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind

James Horner~Battle Beyond the Stars, Aliens, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Basil Poledouris~Conan the Barbarian, The Blue Lagoon (1980), RoboCop, Quigley Down Under, Starship Troopers

Miklos Rozsa~The Thief of Bagdad (1940), Jungle Book (1942), Quo Vadis?, Ben-Hur, King of Kings, Time After Time

Alan Silvestri~Van Helsing, The Mummy Returns, Back to the Future trilogy, Romancing the Stone

Maurice Jarre~Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, A Passage to India, Enemy Mine, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome

John Carpenter~Halloween, The Fog, Big Trouble in Little China, Escape from New York

Ennio Morricone~Two Mules for Sister Sara, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

John Barry~Somewhere in TIme, The Deep, James Bond films, The Lion in Winter, The Black Hole

Tangerine Dream~Firestarter, Legend (with Jerry Goldsmith), Risky Business

Vangelis~Blade Runner, 1492: Conquest of Paradise, Alexander

John Addison~Joseph Andrews, Swashbuckler, Tom Jones

Danny Elfman~PeeWee's Big Adventure, The Nightmare Before Christmas~with songs!, Edward Scissorhands, Batman

Burt Bacharach~After the Fox, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, Arthur

Jerry Goldsmith~Kingdom of Heaven, Patton, Poltergeist, The Mephisto Waltz, QB VII (first TV miniseries), The Omen, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Legend (along with Tangerine Dream), Deep Rising

Michel LeGrand~Wuthering Heights (1970), Summer of '42, Never Say Never Again

David Hentschel~Educating Rita

I imagine I've left so many fantastic soundtracks off the list, as well as many wonderful composers. Henry Mancini comes to mind. How could I miss him?! When I look at my crateful of soundtracks from throughout the years, I am amazed how prices have changed since John Williams made soundtracks popular. I used to get them for 50 cents or a dollar apiece in bargain bins! Now, they never drop the price on them!

RE:
In your opinion, what is the best Orchestral Movie Soundtrack? Is there a movie composer that you like?

The Lord of the Rings movies have BEAUTIFUL soundtracks. Howard Shore is the composer, and though I haven't heard anything else that he composed (that I know of), I really enjoy the music.

I totally have to agree with Terry, I adore The Phantom of the Opera. Andrew Lloyd Weber is a genius, as I've said many times. Some of the songs he has written are among my very favorites, such as "Music of the Night."

The only song that doesn't fit in with the rest of the soundtrack is Guns and Roses version of Sympathy with the devil... the rest is all Score..

The Second for best score is Legend.. (Music by Tangerine Dream.. )
