Is it a bad idea to purposely skip a period here and there? As in, continuing to take birth control pills through the week you should be menstruating? I've only done it once (about 8 years ago) so it's not a common thing.

As long as you are on a monocyclic (meaning 1 dose for 1st 3 weeks) birth control pill, this practice is fine. It is not necessary to have a period every month if you are taking a pill that suppresses the build up of the uterine lining b/c then there is not a lining to shed. It is good however, to involve your doctor in this practice & to allow yourself at least 1 period a year. From: RN

You are fine to not menstruate all the time. There wouldn't be methods out there approved by the FDA if they weren't safe. As stated before, I went nearly five years without a period (thank you, Depo Provera) and I'm healthy as can be. I'm a nursing student with a specialty in OB/GYN and I've had tons of experience. You're fine to skip one. It might throw your cycle off a bit, but as long as you're not timing them for pregnancy right now, it doesn't really matter.

yes it is bad. unless you have the birth control that is meant to keep you from having that period every month. the ones that have the fake pills to make you menstruate could cause major health problems later in life if you skip your periods using them. that's just what my mother has told me and she's a doctor

You really need to get the approval of your DOCTOR before trying to mess with prescription drugs.

Other than that, it should be safe, but you need to get the OK from the doctor first, and be aware that just because you skip, does not mean you will not get your period.

I did it once and won't do it again since it took me months to re regulate my body and the pills.

i started taking the combined pill 5 weeks ago and i asked my doctor if i could take the second packet straight away after coz i didnt want my period while i was on holiday, and she said it was fine, even though i only just started taking it.
is safe to 'tricycle' (take 3 packets in a row) too.
i'm sure theres no problem with it, but ask your doctor if you're unsure.

That can throw off your cycle - not very healthy for the hormones. I disprove of BCP's, b/c with prolonged use, they put sores on your cervix and doctors can sometimes get confused with whether or not it's the BCP or if it's cervical cancer or HPV. At any rate, don't skip periods. Your cycle could permanently get thrown off and be irregular for a long time.

I wouldn't think it would be healthy. Women are meant to bleed every month. If you skip it...I don't know what could happen.
