When someone answers a question and the first thing that comes out of their mouth refers to drugs and smoking. Are they drug addicts and drugs are what is really on their mind?

Maybe, maybe not. It depends on whether they take drugs. Maybe they are related to someone who takes drugs, and this occupies their mind.

It may be on their mind at that time, or they may just very well be making an attempt to reinvent themselves on Y!A. It's very hard to really grasp someone via Y!A.

I would have to say yes, because if it weren't on their mind wouldn't they answer with something else? Either that or they sound like they are trying to get you to confess to something, by baiting their words.
