I have been to most every National park in the country, from Hawaii's Volcanoes to Alaska's Denali to Maine's Arcadia, and a whole bunch in between north and south and MY number one pick is Yellowstone National Park. A close second would be the Grand Canyon

Yellowstone has some of what so many other parks around the country have; so you get some of the others in this one park. It has mountains, some with snow, meadows that are beautiful, multiple waterfalls and the grand canyon of Yellowstone, lakes and streams, and the unique to Yellowstone thermal geysers and hot springs. Plus it is about the only national park where you are guaranteed to see some wild animals like bison, elk, moose and if you get lucky bear. Then too you can drive a short distance and also see the Grand Tetons National Park.

I have been there 5 or 6 times and always enjoy it.

Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado -- I spent was completely in awe. Everywhere you turn, there's another breathtaking vista! I saw bighorn sheep, elk, coyote, and mountain bluebirds -- all without venturing too far into the wilderness. I even got to hike in the snow in August. Awesome! Trail Ridge Road takes you above the treeline, which was great. There are lots of relatively short and easy trails. I've been to other wonderful national parks, but RMNP really stands out in my eyes.

(I admit, I want to know how others respond -- to help me plan my next national park trip!)

I think the Grand Canyon, and in particular I recommend seeing it via a 5-7 day rafting trip on the Colorado River right thru the Grand Canyon. It was, simply put, the best trip of my life!
