The birthday of Jesus,for family's to celebrate this day
with exchange of gifts to symbolize the gifts of the wise men.
This was before it became a commercial venue

Ultimately the birth of Christ.......hence the name CHRISTMAS........but it may have smaller meaning for someothers.....a visit from santa giving, traditons in families etc
