I asked this question a few months ago and I've finally gotten around to seriously tackling this. I want to add an outdoor patio sink and use the galvinized iron cleanout pipe as the drain. I can remove the plug which is male threaded. Can I simply thread on an ABS pipe without any sort of special coupling or anything? I think I'll have to use teflon tape but I figure drain lines aren't high pressure so it should be OK, right? Of course, I'll add an appropriate cleanout plug in the ABS run.

Provided that the threads of the iron are carefully cleaned by wire-brushing I can see no problems, you have virtually answered your own question !

It sounds like you have it well under control, and all previous answers are pretty well right on. If you have room, put your cleanout in the end of a "T" going straight in line with the existing cleanout, this will make it easier in the event you ever do have to run a snake into the line. also vent your new fixture with an automatic ( studor ) vent.

whether this is a waste line and not a furnish line, you need to use what i've got consistently understand as a fernco coupling. those are those rubber couplings with the screw clamps on the two end. you could then depart the percentcontained in the forged iron and connect a clean piece of %. i've got additionally considered percentgot rid of with a dremmel attachment to grind the percentfaraway from the forged iron. the 1st determination right this is easier and you will no longer threat breaking your forged iron pipe this is brittle. although that coupling is to no longer be used under rigidity, so whether this is a furnish line you could no longer use it. reliable luck with it.

yes, it will work. just make sure you add a cleanout like you said. Trap the fixture and vent it or else the trap will lose its seal and your patio will smell like sewer.

I have done this before....seal wasn't the best...so I used a silicone caulk on the threads....that way it sealed it good...but didn't permanently glue them in place.
