I don't watch doctor Phil, but I know for real that an affair DEFINTILEY can't save a marriage. I mean, it could possibly save your marriage from getting any worse than it can be (wahtever reason that is is beyond me) by seeing that two people were not meant to be married at all. You need trust, which goes a long way. My parents are divorced mainly b/c of an affair, I can tell you it defintiley didn't save their marriage!

Dr Phil does not support or encourage for someone to go out and have an affair.

What he means is that eyes are opened an communication begins to flow to repair a marriage once an affair takes place.

can an affair save a marriage?

Absolutely not!

If you are thinking of having an affair, STOP! Redirect your energy. Figure out what is wrong with your marriage and fix it if you want to save it.

It can be saved.

Folks who have come to appreciate their marriage more after an affair report having discovered that the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence.
Affairs are costly, and divorces are costlier. Affairs are angst producing. The thrill of the hunt wears off in short order, and anxiety over shadows the excitement. By definition, affairs are "secret", but keeping such secrets is a full time job that rarely meets with success.
As the saying goes, shopping for and buying the car may be exciting, but the payments may be your ruin!

I think you misinterpreted what DR.Phil meant..He meant if you are in an affair and both partners get therapy you can work thru issues that led to the breakdown of the marriage. He didnt mean go have an affair to make your marriage better. Anyone who watches his shows knows he would never advocate having an affair..

Don't try to rationalize that it's OK for you to have an affair. It's not OK. You misinterpreted Dr. Phil's stance.

You cannot have a great marriage without trust. You cannot trust the untrustworthy people who have an affair.

Only thing I can think of is that if the affair is discovered, it forces the couple to face their problems and get therapy. I think that's a load though. If you're having problems, you need to address them BEFORE it comes to that. An affair would destroy trust forever. There would forever be a shadow of doubt about the person who cheated. Dr. Phil is a quack.

I don't understand how losing all faith and trust in the person you married can SAVE your marriage.

Maybe he meant that, when a spouse has an affair, that the one who has been cheated ON sees the "other person" as competition, and steps up their game a little bit, to try and win their spouse back.

I wouldn't want to remain with someone that I couldn't trust.

One of the most common questions spouses ask when confronting a marriage crisis is this: How can I save my marriage if my partner doesn't want to help find a solution? How do I succeed I am trying to save my marriage on my own? Learn here https://bitly.im/aMouu It is a typical enough story: one partner leaves, the other stays. One remains 'in love', the other is uncertain. Whatever it is that has caused a couple to be apart, the one person who remains bears the prospect, fear, doubt, desire, hope of saving his or her marriage' alone.

It would just add another complication that you would have to deal with. Sort out the marriage and if that can't be saved, then have the affair.
