hi, i have recently showed an interest in pc strategy games. What is the best to play for a new gamer, age of empires, empire earth or something like the settlers? I like games where you can build your own armies and take over the world.
Bear in mind my pc isn't the most powerful, and has windows xp. thanks.

Well to be honest I would recommend starcraft to start off with and here are the reasons.
First of all it does not take a fancy computer to run so you will be great.
Secondly: It is extremely balanced, yo can't just abuse one race or a certains strategy, this is extremly important.
Thirdly people will say it is outdated, but it was and still is considered the best strategy game ever sold.
Fourth: The new starcraft game is slated to come out soon so by learning the original you wil have an edge on everyone else when you are ready to advance.
Fifth: It is extremly fun and addictive, very creative.

Everyone else is offering good suggestions. Not sure how some of them will play on XP though like Starcraft. I just recently started playing Starcraft, and in spite of it being an older game (1998), I have found myself getting caught up in it. Does it matter about whether it is real-time strategy or turn-based? I prefer the real-time strategy myself. I think the Civilization series is turn-based. The first Age of Empires game is a classic and a good introduction for beginners, like Starcraft, and can still be found on Walmart store shelves. The first two Stronghold games in the series were good games in their own right, but I have't been as much a fan of later versions. I think your best bet would be Rise of Nations though. All around good game and I believe it plays on XP with no problems, if you can find it for sell somewhere that is. If you are asking which of those 3 you listed would be best, then I would say either of the first 2. The Settlers is a rather old game going back to 1993. I would just forget that one.

If your system isn't the greatest or the fastest try these games. Emperor, Rise of the Middle Kingdom allows you to build your own cities in ancient China. There's ancestor worship, trade and agriculture involved. Its a decent game and can be had now for nine dollars or less. There's also battles against the invading Mongol armies.
The Total War games (Shogun and Medieval (not Medieval II) will work well on your system. Here's your chance to build your empire, establish trade and use politics and assassination and religion as a way to gain power and rule Japan or Europe. Medieval Total War has an expansion pack called "Viking Invasion" that allows you to play the Vikings and use hit/run/rape and pillage tactics on coastal towns. It also provides you with all new maps and scenarios versus the Medieval total War game.

Dude, WoW is not a Strategy game lol.
Go with Starcraft man, or old Civ's. Starcraft all the way is where i'm putting my money, comp should run it more than fine, and there's still online play, as well as a decent campaign and a expansion. Then you can prep yourself up for StarCraft 2...oh yes Starcraft 2...

Civilization III. I don't care for Civ IV.
Age of Empires II, again I didn't like AOE III. Also there's a Star Wars Gattlegrounds based on the AOE II engine that adds aircraft into the mix.
Galactic Civilization II: Gold Edition. Big upgrade of the Master of Orion series.
If you can find it, AD 1503.
I run all of these on an old laptop with like 32 meg video.
