How does greenwich mean time(GMT) relate to time zones

The times zones around the world are defined at so many hours before or after GMT. A few of them are hours +/- half hour, or hours /-+ 15 minutes.

By the way, GMT is not used any more. Since 1972, it's really Coordinated Universal Time, UTC. The difference is less than a second, but it's important for some things.
