How come Christmas is also named X-mas?... was that just someones way of shortening it, or is there some background to it?.....

X looks a lot like the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek spelling of Christ. Chi was used as an abbreviation of "Christ."

The letter that looks like X to us is also the capital letter 'chi' in the Greek alphabet. That's the first letter of 'Christ' (or Christos in Greek).
