Yeah, you can do it. What I woud do is go ahead and connect it together as explained earlier. Do not use electrical tape, though. Go to the hardware store (or even like Walmart or Kmart for that matter) and get some wire nuts. Just ask, They will know what you are talking about. After the wire nuts you can wrap tape around them and then around the whole mess just to be safe. It is a quick fix to get you through the holidays. You will want to put a new plug on it, though, as stated above. It depends on how close to the plug it was cut. If it was close and you can get away with putting a new on on and still have enough cord to work with, that is the best and easiest solution. If it is closer to the vacuum, you can actually replace the entire cord. You will have to unscrew the bottom of the vacuum, but it is not as difficult as it may seem. That is probably a whole nother question, though. We would need to know if the cord is screwed in or soldered in. Anyway, the safety concern with "wire nutting" it back together is this, If you ran the vacuum too far and tugged on the cord it could still come apart and then you would have the bare wires hanging out while it is still plugged in. That's not good. So do be carefull if you go this route. :o)

It would be inadvisable to try to splice the cord.
Even a professional splice would constitute a hazard.
It the cut is near enough to the end, install a
new plug and use the shorter cord.
You can probably purchase a replacement cord
from the manufacturer if needed.

Using a thicker wire is better. If you are really worried about it the answer is simple. Splice the wire in and plug in the vacuum and turn it on. After 5-10 minutes grab the wire and feel how hot it is. That will give you your answer. I recommend that you fold the wires after splicing and tape them so you have a loop on each side. Make it loose. Since you are tugging on the wire while vacuuming just splicing is not good as it could pull apart after awhile. By making a coil and taping it takes the strain off of splice.

For safety reasons, you should not splice the cord.
You can cut the cord at the damaged section and put a plug there, or should replace the entire cord.

Please do not do it. Especially on a vacuum cleaner. You can be vacuuming and inadvertently come to the end of the cord and put undue stress on it. A spliced cord is NOT that strong. I am 83, been there and even though i can do it, i wont. I think more of my wife than that. Not that expensive to be safe. Merry Christmas Cassie.

It can be done but like others have said it is a safety risk. You are just best to replace the whole cord or put a plug end on where it is cut. Saying as you have a kid I would have someone who knows what they are doing do this so your child doesn't accidentally get shocked!

Yes, you can do it.
You will need to cut away just a little bit of the black wire covers (about 1/4 of an inch or so). Then twist together (or use solder if you know how to) the wires back together being careful to match up the colors. Then use a small wire cover you can get at any home improvement store to cover the area you repaired for safety.
Good look.
