It is possible to get a stomach ailment from the water or even fresh produce. There is simply different bacteria in the water in different places around the globe. Most cities here have a good water system but if your gut isn't use to this water your likely to get sick.
The first time I traveled here I got sick 3 weeks into my vacation and the only thing I used tap water for was brushing my teeth.
It is easy to pick up something at the pharmacy if your wife does get ill. They usually give you Flagyl. You can go in and ask for it yourself or tell the pharmacist your wife has a stomach ailment from drinking the water and that she is a foreigner...they'll know what the problem is and what to give her.
Ah yeah so now I live here, I still drink bottled water normally just because I don't like the taste of the tap water. I sometimes drink tap if I am at someones house who doesn't serve bottled and I forgot mine.

Water is in fact the main culprit in the getting sick story. My proof is that every time I go I get sick, and I do not drink tap water, but I do love the orange juice and drink that everywhere I go. But, when I was there last time, I was pregnant so I was even more careful about drinking only bottled water, and not drinking juice outside the house when I was sure there was no water or ice in it. And guess what? I did not get sick at all.
Now, I also think it is a good idea for anyone who travels to get a Hep A vaccine. You get a booster I think six months or a year after the first shot and you don't ever need to do it again.

I didn't get sick from anything, guess I was lucky. She should see her doctor and make sure she is up to date on her immunizations, especially the Hep A and B series. She should also get a script for an antibiotic used to treat Traveler's Diarrhea, and bringing some anti-diarrhea meds and Tylenol are a good idea.

I only got sick one time and I believe it was from fresh produce. I got the hepatitis A and B shots plus my doctor gives me an antibiotic every time I go. Just don't drink the tap water and eat only peelable fruits. I also bring anti-diarrhea medicine and probiotics. Have a great vacation!

Well sometimes. It is mostly the water. Do not drink the tap water, instead buy bottles of clean water. My mom did this to us. After like 2 weeks of bottled water, she mixed a little of the tap water with the bottled water, and after 2 weeks of that we drank tap water lol. The bottled water got too expensive since it was hot and we drank like 4 gallons a day :P Also, when she first comes tell her not to eat anything she wants untill she is used to the food there.. I got sick like that since they sold ice cream cones for like 1 dirham, which is like less than a quarter in the U.S. and I bought like a bazillion of them. Oh and their milk is TOTALLY different from the U.S's you can easily get sick from that too! I heated my milk then let it cool then drank it..my mom said it gets rid of the germs I wasn't used to yet. After a couple weeks I just drank it without heating it =] And tell her not to drink "Lbin", which is like sour milk I guess? , untill she is totally used to everything! Sometimes they give you sour Lbin, so make sure you know what type of Lbin you're buying before you eat it lol..Trust me this is ALL from experience, I think the worst thing is getting sick from the Lbin, u get diarrhea and your stomach hurts..
Tell her to bring Advil with her =)
I hope you both have a happy stay!
