and the text was a code with random letters and numbers and symbols. the person that sent it, she said that she didnt do anything and it did it automatically. is my phone infected with a virus or something?

Since you didn't give the make or model of your phone (why would you omit such important info???), it is virtually impossible to give you a direct answer.
If your cellphone has an operating system that allows you to access the internet, then, yes, it is possible that your phone has a virus. However, text messaging, alone, won't do it, regardless of the characters or phone used.
If your cellphone does not have an operating system, then, no, it can't.
