my mother was trying to lift a heavy object all by herself;

Acute back strain is not an unusual occurrence. If two ibuprofen or two naprosyn tablets and bed rest don't alleviate the pain, consider a trip to the ER.

But first you should call the doctor.

Take her to a doctor. I slipped a disc in my spine and the only way to fix it if it doesn't fix itself is surgery. Sometimes excercise and just waiting will help, but she should see the doctor soon so it doesn't cause anymore damage or pain for too long.

it could be a mild to severe back strain but your spine is nothing to guess about. if a couple ibuprofen don't do the job then call a doctor.

could be back strain, however if the pain gets worse get x rays.
