4x^2-36=0
(2x-6)(2x+6)=0
2x-6=0
2x+6=0

4x^2 - 36 + 36 = 0 + 36
4x^2 = 36
(4x^2) / 4 = 36 / 4
x^2 = 9
x = sq. root of 9 = 3

I think the easiest way to see this is to isolate the variable by adding 36 to both sides of the equation...
4x^2 = 36
Further isolate by dividing both sides by 4.
x^2 = 9
Now you know why it can be 3 or -3. The POSITIVE solution would be the one without the negative symbol...

4x^2-36=0
4x^2= 36
Divide both sides by 4.
x^2 = 9
take square root of 9
x= 3

move the -36 to the other side, then divide by 4, and then take the square root of that (which is +/- 9) and take the positive one.

1st you factor out the 4 so it is
4(x^2-9)
Then you factor out in between the brackets s it will be:
4(x-3)(x+3)
so x = 3 or x= -3
