I have uninstalled and reinstalled my AOL software, defragged my computer, changed access numbers, etc. I have called AOL tech support 6 times, but the problem still exists.

I am now thinking it might be the modem, especially since I also use hyperterminal which also uses the same dial-up modem, and it is intermittant as well.

Any ideas?

Sometimes it runs fast as lightening and other times it wont even load a webpage, it just hangs up. That is why I thought it might be a modem.

Thanks rs2007, but already did all that. I clean the temp files, cookies, etc on a regular basis. I run ad-aware and spybot and Norton on a regular basis and it is still slow. Also I tried a system restore, but it would not restore to a previous date.

just nate: Can a modem overheat and act up? It seems when I first start up the computer it connects best. After it has been on a while, it gets slower.

First thing i would do is go to tool at the top of the page on the Internet then Internet options delete all of your cookies
then delete files check the little window in the delete files
ok out then log off the Internet then go back to your Internet
it will not hurt anything it will just clean your register.
This will make it some faster.
Then delete every thing that you don't use on your start up
page.

Theres a few thing you can try, First try using dial up connection and manually inputting the AOL phone number & your login then use internet explorer to browse web site and see if that dosent eliminate the overhead AOL taxes on your system. Second try going to dslreports.com and use there speed test and see how fast your connection really is. Also download DR TCP it will allow you to configure your windows settings to allow maximum bandwidth

Sometimes, it can be the modem. Like all electronic devices that pass information, they can become jammed. I would delete your cookies and temp. internet files... then I would switch off your modem and then switch it back on... It'll be slow at first, as it has to warm back up... but it should be fine after that. Try it. It can't hurt. It happened a a lot with my modem at home, and all I had to do was turn it off then on. It usually fixed the problem.

I'd suggest that you clear your cookies, cashe, and such.

If that doesn't work, then I'd suggest that you maybe reinstall the software, but I'm not sure if that would work.

Is it possible that a lot of people are accessing the Internet through AOL around the time that you are accessing it, therefore giving you a slower connection?

Good luck and I hope I helped!

Ok, I just had this same problem. You need more ram. To check go to start/ right click on my computer and go to properties. It should say XXXXmb of Ram or XXXmb of Ram. If you have less than 690mb then you need more Ram memory. Go to crucial.com and take their scan of your computer than buy ram right off of their website. =Þ
