as a single mom back in 2000 i signed over temporary custody and now my mom refuses to give her back to me after begging since 2001. It's now 2007! How can I get her back? Call social services? Cops? This was done in VA and mom packed up my daughter and moved to FL.

Hire a family law attorney and prepare yourself for a heartache of a battle. Remember - this will disrupt your daughter's life and hurt her alot. Tread carefully. I hope you have at least kept in touch with your daughter thru all this.

Well for starters, you need a lawyer. You need to find out if you have to handle this in VA or in FL. Once you know then you need to get something filed in court.

Why did you wait so long? When you asked the first time and she refused you should have gotten a lawyer right then and handled this. You have let alot of time pass and your child is now settled in with your mom and living her life. You may have really messed up your chances by letting so much time pass.

Best of luck, but you need an attorney.

Yeah you need to get an attorney. How old is she? In the State of Florida when a child is 12 they can decide where they want to live sometimes younger if they are mature. Usually the court will decide in the mothers favor no matter what state. The courts believe that a child is better off with the mother IF she has her life in order. But it sounds like you are going to have to take it to court.

I feel your pain. I'm going through something similar. I gave my mom temporary emergency guardianship of my kids when I was assaulted (the last time) by my ex..and had to go through rehab and counseling...and didn't want him to get them. It's now been almost 9 months and it's blown up into a huge custody battle with him fighting my mother for custody of them and me having to fight for custody of them as well...so instead of a two way custody battle, it's turned into a three way custody war. My suggestion is to see an attorney and do whatever it takes to get custody of your kids back. If you just signed over temporary guardianship, it shouldn't be too much of an issue for you to get them back...the question is going to be in what state do you need to file...and I'm not sure about that.

First of all, are you finally sober?

Do not interfere with this child's life until you have serious sobriety time, you are in a program, and you have a sponsor.

Your next step will be to hire a good attorney.
