Welding or soldering aluminum is exciting. A MIG welder is supposed to work. I would recommend talking to a welding shop or using epoxy with some fiberglass tape on the outside.

MIG stands for Metal In Gas. It uses a wire fed through a pistol type grip that surrounds the welding point with neutral gas like argon, carbon dioxide or nitrogen depending on the metal. It is a form of arc welding. I have not done, but have seen it done and people tell me that it is easier than stick arc welding or torch welding because the gas allows clean welds on metals that don't want weld easily when exposed to air.
There is also TIG (Tungsten In Gas) where the equipment looks similar, but the wire only supplies the welding arc.
