I am connected to GoDaddy.com through their ftp client. It is allowing me to transfer files, but no matter what I transfer, the site still says "under construction." It doesn't actually allow me to edit where I want this stuff to be. Please someone help. I don't know how to do any of this!

What is index.html? What does it do? Where do I get it?

I found a file called "gdform.asp", but when I open it, I don't understand all of the crazy writing inside. Is it some comp. language? Do I have to learn something just to edit the site?

Could someone possibly post a link to a file I can download as an example for what I should be uploading to the server? Or maybe a tutorial of what I should be typing and submiting?

Trying to explain the file structure would probably take to long, so I'll try to keep this simple. On your web server there is what's known as a root directory. You know you found it when the screen lists all the pages and folders on your website. When you get to the root, you may notice some folders, which will look like any other folder in windows, and some icons that look like pages. The kind of icon varies with web servers and I don't know what Godaddy uses. Anyway, the files that look kinda like pages are HTML pages. You web pages. The will have the ".html" at the end.

This is where your index.html file goes. The index file is your home page. In other words, when people click a link to your website, the index file is the first web page they will see. When this file is placed in the root, then you will see your home page and not the default "under construction" message.

By the way, if you are using FrontPage 2003, email me and I'll show you how to upload to the server with a single click of the mouse.

For links, try this one first: http://help.godaddy.com/article.php?app%5Fhdr=&ci=9075&article%5Fid=1668

And then this: http://help.godaddy.com/article.php?article_id=2224&topic_id=&prog_id=GoDaddy

Good luck.

Like the guy said above.

Also delete the page that was there before you uploaded anything, as that page takes priority over any other named files.

Confirm which index pages are configured by godaddy, it could be any of:

index.htm, index.html, index.asp, index.php, default.htm.... etc etc

If none of your pages are named as the index or default page, it won't display anything.

What is "index.html"? It's just the name of the first page of your site. Whatever you named the page you want people to visit first, rename it to this.

It's the page that the browser goes to when you call up www.mysite.com, without adding a page name after the domain like www.mysite.com/page2.htm

Well, you have to transfer a file to the main folder (probably htdocs?) called index.html or index.php/.asp/.cgi/.pl depeding on what language your are using. Then an acutal page will show up instead of the generic page of under construction

Index.html is the first page of your website that people will see when they type in your domain name.

If you wish to edit the homepage of your website, then you should edit the Index.html file.

drdavid is correct.

You need to put an index.htm or index.html into your main folder, usually www or htdocs.

Good luck with go daddy. I had nothing but problems. They charged my credit card repeated times, and I am still trying to resolve the situation.
