I am a Floridian and have never been exposed to any kind of cold weather less than about 60 degrees. I am going up to North Carolina in a couple of days and I am completely in the dark about what to wear for that kind of cold weather. (It is snowing)
What kinds of clothes should I buy? and any ideas on where I can get them?

Coming from Chicago, I LOVE the cold. But only when I'm dressed warm enough to keep from getting chilblains (a itchy rash from the cold that most people mistake for frostbite)

Personally, I've always loved my trench coat. Close it if it's cold and breezy and open if it's warmer. If you can find a good one, it'll have lined pockets to put your hands in when it gets to cold and it'll be just loose enough to let your skin breath indoors to keep you from sweating. For pants, try something thick and loose to keep the wind from getting at you and make sure you only wear ONE THICK PAIR OF SOCKS. As a previous poster stated if your feet sweat you'll be unhappy in a hurry. Boots are always nice if you expect to be going through the snow alot, and some waterproofing spray is perfect if you can find it at a sports store.

Seeing as you're not acclimatized at all to deal with the weather you're going in to it's probably best that you have a scarf , a hat and thick waterproof gloves too. Exposed skin will dry out so MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CHAPSTICK AND LOTION to re-moisturize. Things like earmuffs, light gloves, tight pants, ect... will probably be worn by the locals there but they're used to it.

The only problem with a trench coat is finding one that's nice looking. I had to get mine online. If you want a cute one try something light colored, my old g/f had a bright red one that was perfectly festive for the holidays.

Happy Holidays and stay warm!

Layers of clothing are the answer. My assumption is you will be outdoors. Start with silk long underwear. It is natural fabric and insulates if you get wet. Blue jeans are worthless if wet. Wear synthetics like Columbia, or wool. Wear a longsleeve shirt of some kind over the silk long underwear which could include a turtle neck.

Top it off with a sweater made of wool or a synthetic like polar fleece. Get wool or synthetic mittens and stocking cap. Top it off with a waterproof, breathable fabric outer coat.

For feet, get some polar fleece or wool socks and a pair of waterproof trail runners or some type of high ankle shoe or hiking boot.

To purchase try Cabela's or REI on the web. Look for products with Gore Tex and Thinsulate and polar fleece.

A good warm jacket, some gloves or mittens, mittens are warmer they keep your fingers together. A hat if you prefer, a scarf works wonders. Keep your feet from sweating. If they sweat you can get miserable in a hurry. Some good warm socks. Keep your outer extremities warm and you will stay warm. Your outer extremities are your hands and your feet. I hope you enjoy the snow. I hope I helped you.

You need jeans, long sleeve shirts, a warm jacket(maybe a north face or Columbia), warm socks, and tennis shoes or snow boots. You can get this stuff at a mall or maybe a sports store.

Wear several layers. Layers keep you warmer than one thick garment, and you can add and remove them to regulate your temperature. If your outer layer is wind/water resistant, that will help, too. And yes, keep your hands, feet and head warm. Have fun!

Get a coat, some sweat shirts and/or sweaters. If you think it will be too much for you...add in a hat and gloves.

Enjoy your visit.
