The Acropolis and the area of Placa on its northern slope.
The ancient theatre of Dionysos on its southern slope.
An evening with dinner on the cafe on Lycabettus hill. You can go by funicular railway from Kolonaki area.
Shopping at Kolonaki - it is expensive though.
The national archaeological museum, the Byzantine museum and the Benaki museum. Really, I don't go hide in museums when I visit a city, but these are a must! Not huge either.
Daily trips:
1. Aegina island, you take the ferry from Piraeus every hour. Nice town and a nice ancient temple (Afaia).
2. Delphi archaeological site and Hosios Lukas Byzantine monastery. Wow!
3. Nafplio, nice town, and the nearby archaeological sites of Mycenae and Epidauros.
Daily trips to Olympia or Meteora are out of the question, because it takes a long time to drive there, but 2-3 day trips would be interesting, if you have the time.

Depending the time of your visit there are a lot of things to do.
The Acropolis and Sounion are a must and I'm sure no one will visit Athens and no visit the Acropolis.
The National Archaeological Museum, and the Benakeio Museum.
Then there is Plaka and Monastiraki and the close by Thisseion and if you feel up to it go up as far as Filopappou Hill to admire Acropolis from afar.
See the change of the Guards at the Parliament grounds in Syntagma square. Stroll down and have a coffee at the cafes down the square.
If you have the time go down to Piraeus and take a walk on the Pasalimani and further south to the Peiraiki with the many fish restaurants.
Still for the fun of it, take the Hydrofoil to Aigina (Egina) or Poros or Spetses or any of the other islands.
The trip to Sounion will get you through the south east part of Attiki and the suburbs.
Daily trips can be arranged for Delphi or Olympia or Meteora.
What you shouldn't miss in Athens is visiting a taverna in Psiri district and mix with the people, to see Greeks at their best activity. Eating.
Then you try to be a part of that picture. You gonna love it. Mix with the people, have a glass of wine, have two but don't drive. Merry Christmas or whatever you celebrate.

Everything in Athens is amazing, don't miss these things in the rest of Greece though:
Crete.
The windmills of Mykonos at sunset.
Santorini (allegedly the location of the Atlantis myth)
Black Sand beaches

Parthenon, Acropolis, walk thru the olympic park, museum in central Athens.
If you are a history buff, Greece is it.
If you are a beech nut, Greece is it.
If you are a fun seeker, Greece is it.
I am not Greek. But I just visited Athens and I loved it.
