During College I had an HP laptop which worked great. I then got an Acer because it was on sale and I had no problems with it either. I actually like Acer quite a bit. It's less expensive, but has just as good graphics and memory as other's out there. The only problem I found was battery life. The battery doesn't last long, but if you are able to find a seat in your class close to an outlet and just plug it in, that will solve that problem right there. I just bought a new ACER a few months ago and absolutely love it. SO I personally would go with Acer.

Of the 2 you mention and for your particular use the Dell would be the way for you to go.
However Mac is the best and most trouble free, there are a few issue's with software you may use and need. But there are a ton of college students that use Mac's, and I prefer them.
Don
Oh stay away from anything other than what you have mentioned.

TOTALLY GET THE MAC!!!
Mac - SUPER easy to use, college student discount (last time i checked you get a free iPod or something), cool multimedia software, looks cool. just make sure to buy Microsoft office word, No viruses and really nice customer support
Dell XPS- a PC, will inevitably crash, not bad and state of the art, Vista nonsense to deal with, angry/condescending customer support. PC benefits like games and stuff but not as easy to use as a mac but its the traditional computer.

Mac is more secure but supports software fewer than XP.
Mac's Software is more Expensive and harder to find.
I prefer Dell XP, with 1000usd you can have a core 2 duo Laptop, 512mb gva and more.
There're more softwares for XP os, easy to find and buy, they're cheaper.
